Workshop 3: Explore Data Partnerships - Collaborate with Academia and the Private Sector

The Workshop has been specifically created for individuals who have first-hand knowledge of programmatic priorities of UN funds, agencies and programmes, and the challenges related to leveraging traditional as well as emerging data sources. Agencies are invited to nominate two individuals to participate in the workshop. One representative should be able to define a programmatic challenge which could be solved using an innovative approach to data. Other participants could be drawn from the data/statistics community, IT, data science or partnerships communities.

Ms. Jenna Slotin
Senior Director for Policy and Strategy - Global Partnership for Sustainable Development Data Jenna Slotin is Senior Director for Policy and Strategy for the Global Partnership for Sustainable Development Data. Prior to this she was Director, Sustainable Development Policy at the UN Foundation. She has over 12 years of experience at the UN and working on UN policy issues related to sustainable development and peacebuilding with a particular focus on analyzing the political dynamics around the 2030 Agenda, financing for development, sustainable development data, and the UN’s peacebuilding architecture.
Mr. Stefaan Verhulst
Co-founder and Chief Research and Development Officer - GOVLAB @NYU Stefaan G. Verhulst is Co-Founder and Chief Research and Development Officer of the Governance Laboratory @NYU (GovLab) where he is responsible for building a research foundation on how to transform governance using advances in science and technology.
Dr Robert Chen
Director: Centre for International Earth Science Information Network - University of Colombia Robert is the director of the Center for International Earth Science Information Network (CIESIN), a research unit of the Earth Institute at Columbia University. He manages the NASA Socioeconomic Data and Applications Center, part of NASA’s network of earth science data centers. He also co-manages the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Data Distribution Center, which provides access to data and information from IPCC assessments and reports. Robert recently completed two terms as Secretary-General of the Committee on Data for Science and Technology (CODATA), an interdisciplinary body of the International Council for Science. He is currently a co-chair of the Data Sharing Working Group of the Group on Earth Observations (GEO), an intergovernmental initiative to implement a Global Earth Observing System of Systems (GEOSS). He is also a member of the U.S. National Research Council (NRC) Board on International Scientific Organizations (BISO) and has served as an ex officio member of the NRC Board on Research Data and Information (BRDI). Robert received his Ph.D. in geography from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and M.S. and B.S. degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Ms. Thavisha Gomez
Research Manager - Lirneasia Thavisha is a Research Manager at LIRNEasia, attached to the Big Data team. As part of her current engagement, she is managing a research project on mapping big data for development and the sustainable development goals, with a focus on the Global South. She has previously worked as a freelance consultant and as a senior analyst in research and strategy consulting firms in Sri Lanka. She holds a Bachelors degree in Computer Science, from the Institute of Technological Studies and an MBA from the Postgraduate Institute of Management.
Mr. Jorn Poldermans
Project Officer: Peace Informatics Lab - Leiden University's Centre for Innovation / HumanityX At the Centre for Innovation, Jorn is responsible for the Peace Innovation Lab The Hague and develops intervention design frameworks and innovation processes to help industry and government partners measurably increase positive, prosocial engagement across group boundaries. Within the Centre for Innovation, Jorn focuses primarily on innovation process management, behaviour design and rapid prototyping with private and public stakeholders. The Hague’s Lab is part of a global network initiated by Stanford University. This way, the technologies that are being developed benefit from inspirations and lessons learned from all over the world, building a new sector that links ICT with (social) entrepreneurship. Prior to joining the Centre for Innovation he studied in Amsterdam, Sydney and Leiden. Jorn received his MSc in Political Science from the University of Amsterdam and his MA in International Relations from Leiden University.
Ms. Rebecca Firth
Community Partnerships Manage - Humanitarian Open Street Map Team Rebecca is HOT’s Community Partnerships Manager. She joined the HOT staff team in December 2016, and has actively volunteered with HOT and Missing Maps since 2014. In her role at HOT, Rebecca focuses on sustaining and growing the community to strengthen the impact HOT projects can have. She also runs the Microgrants program, supporting OpenStreetMap communities around the world to scale and build local capacity. Prior to joining HOT, Rebecca worked in CSR at a global management consulting firm, where she led the setup of a digital skilling programme for job-seekers and entrepreneurs, working with a wide range of charity partners to embed the programme. As a volunteer, she also led the creation of a sustainable mapping community of 3,000 people. Rebecca holds an MA in Geography from the University of Cambridge.

Mr. Tariq Khokhar
Global Data Editor & Senior Data Scientist - World Bank Group (WB) Tariq Khokhar is a Data Scientist and the institution's Global Data Editor. His interests lie where technology, development and data meet. He enjoys communicating with data, works on developing new methods for creating, analyzing and visualizing data, and on making data openly accessible for public re-use. He's a mathematician and computer scientist by training, is a graduate of the University of Cambridge and currently lives in Washington DC.
Dr. Lori Foster
Professor of Psychology and Fellow of the White House Social and Behavioural Sciences Team - White House Social and Behavioural Sciences Team Lori is a Professor of industrial-organizational psychology at North Carolina State University and the University of Cape Town, a Fellow with the White House Social and Behavioral Sciences Team, and a Behavioral Sciences Advisor to the United Nations. She has held visiting scholar appointments at a number of universities around the world, including the London Business School, Singapore Management University, and the Universities of Valencia, Barcelona, and Bologna. As a scientist-practitioner, she has more than 15 years of experience as a consultant, applying the science of work behavior to regional, state, national, and international organizations in the private and public sectors. Lori has delivered hundreds of papers and talks to audiences in countries spanning six continents.
